Rules: The Board of Directors of Grassroots America voted unanimously to hold a one-time viewing of the board’s video interviews with the two remaining candidates in the runoff election for Sheriff of Smith County. Our executive director consulted an attorney regarding personal statements made in the course of the interviews by one of the candidates. Although the names used refer to individuals in their official capacities as elected officials, appointed officials, or law enforcement officers, the Board wanted to make sure that our organization would not open itself up to litigation if we offered these videos for a one-time viewing.
The Board of Directors of Grassroots America – We the People made a promise to the candidates at the beginning of each taped interview that these videos would only be used for the Board’s decision-making process and never used for commercial or campaign purposes. We will keep that promise; therefore, these videos will not be posted on-line, will not be made available for download, nor will they be reproduced in any way for distribution.
  1. Recording or taping of the interviews by anyone during this one-time viewing is prohibited. Both candidates will be asked to sign a release in the presence of witnesses before the viewing begins. This legal release states that the undersigned candidate takes full responsibility for any of his supporters or any member of his campaign staff who makes a recording of the interviews and uses the prohibited recording to support or attack a candidate.
  2. Local media representatives interested in the interviews are welcome; however, the media representatives are also asked not to tape or record any portion of the candidate interviews as the media’s posted audios and videos of the original content could be used by one of the campaigns, therefore allowing the campaigns or their supporters to circumvent the rules. As always, Grassroots America welcomes local media interest in our meetings, and we welcome reporters to attend this one-time viewing to report on the content, if it is deemed newsworthy.
Note: Grassroots America spokesmen will not be available for comment on this topic prior to the Wednesday event.
