Tyler, Texas – Today, the Grassroots Board of Directors endorsed Ted Cruz for the United States Senate and urged Smith County voters to vote early before the Memorial Day weekend.
The organization’s executive director JoAnn Fleming said, “Constitutional Conservatives in Texas must wrest this United States Senate seat from the Austin establishment crowd and send a proven defender of the Constitution to Washington, DC. We won’t have to worry about whether or not Ted Cruz understands the Constitution, his proven record of fighting and defending liberty is legendary.”
She added, “It’s quite humorous to hear Dewhurst supporters like Gov. Mike Huckabee say ‘Washington insiders are trying to buy this race.’ Really? So he wants us to believe the most constitutional conservative leaders on the national scene endorsing Ted Cruz – Sarah Palin, Sen. Rand Paul, Sen. Mike Lee, Sen. Jim DeMint, Sen. Tom Coburn, Sen. Pat Toomey, and Dr. Ron Paul are Washington insiders? The fig leaves the Dewhurst camp is using for cover are getting a bit thin!”
Fleming emphasized, “Grassroots Texans know the truth now about how the state budget is being balanced year after year with accounting gimmicks, deferrals to the Foundation School Program, tax speed-ups on some businesses, diversion of fund balances to the general fund, and a Medicaid credit card. We know state leadership plans to use the Rainy Day Fund to cover their planned deficit. Lt. Governor Dewhurst is hoping the people of Texas will give him a promotion so that when the call for a “clean up on aisle nine” goes out in the legislature next year, he’ll be gone.
Driving the point home, Fleming said, “State leaders like Dewhurst who flip-flopped on the anti-TSA groping bill last year, presided over session after session of failure to deal with the high cost of illegal aliens in this state, and who have no real plan on the table to deal with the red ink in Austin, don’t deserve a promotion to Washington, DC. The last thing we need in Washington is another go-along-to-get-along, business-as-usual rhetorical ringmaster. We need to send a Texan who will ride to the rescue of our country and shake up Washington. Ted Cruz is the fighter we need.”
Note: The endorsement was made with 7 of 9 votes. The Board of Directors acknowledges there are other strong conservatives in the race (with the exception of Lt. Governor Dewhurst). We encourage them to find ways to serve the people of this state and to remain active in the constitutional conservative movement. We like their passion, their temperament, and their quick wit. They are skilled debaters with principle.
