Fight Obama – Save Internet Freedom

Sen. Cruz: Time Is Running Out

to Save Internet Freedom

Unveils new countdown clock site; Congress must act before September 30 to protect freedom on the Internet

August 31, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) today launched a new website raising awareness of the September 30 deadline for Congress to stop President Obama’s radical proposal to transition oversight of Internet domains to ICANN, threatening freedom of speech on the Internet. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, is a global organization consisting of 162 countries, including authoritative regimes such as China, Russia, and Iran that do not have a First Amendment right to free speech.

“Right now, the Obama administration’s proposal to give away the Internet is an extraordinary threat to our freedom, and it’s one that many Americans don’t know anything about,” the website reads. “It is scheduled to go into effect September 30, 2016. Congress must act before it’s too late!”

In June, Sen. Cruz and Rep. Sean Duffy (R-Wis.) introduced the Protecting Internet Freedom Act, which would prevent the Obama administration from giving the Internet away and ensure that the United States maintains sole ownership of the .gov and .mil top-level domains, which are vital to national security.

This September, Congress can also block Obama’s Internet giveaway by inserting legislative language into the government funding bill preventing any funds from being used for this purpose.
