James H. (Jim) Sellers was born and raised in Burnet County, Texas and graduated from high school in Marble Falls. He attended The University of Texas for one semester before dropping out to join the Air Force, serving at Lackland and Kelly Air Force bases, Texas, Ashiya, Japan, Osan, Korea, and Fort Mead Maryland. After the Air Force he returned to UT and earned a BBA in accounting. He worked in public accounting and the petrochemical industry in Houston before returning to school for an MBA at the University of Houston and a PhD at the University of Arkansas. He taught accounting at Texas A & M, Ole Miss and UT Tyler for the next 35 years. Retiring in 2003.
In 1962, while working in Houston, he married Jeanne Shanks. They have two children and two grandchildren.
Jim first got involved in partisan politics during his stay at Texas A & M, serving as an election worker and in various Republican party positions at the county level. During his academic career he was active in several professional organizations including the Texas Society of CPAs and the National Association of Accountants. He is the author or coauthor of numerous articles and several books. Jim and Jeanne have lived in Smith County for almost 40 years.
