Note:  The following is not a Grassroots America-sponsored event.  If you have any questions about the town hall, please don’t send them to JoAnn. This notice is a courtesy to the state representatives who are making themselves available to folks attending the East TX State Fair. Let’s face it — many who attend the fair would not come out to the usual political town hall meeting. These legislators are offering a different access point in a different venue.  If you can’t make it to the fair on Sept. 24, you’ll get another chance in the near future.  In the meantime, if you can go out to support this effort, please put this town hall on your calendar.  The reps. won’t mind if you eat a funnel cake or curly fries while you’re participating in the great Q&A session.  Just don’t talk with your mouth full!

Sept. 24 town hall meeting with Hughes, Schaefer & Simpson

Rep. Matt Schaefer, R-Tyler will host a town hall meeting, along with fellow East Texas representatives Bryan Hughes, R-Mineola and David Simpson, R-Longview.

 A mini civics lesson

The Texas Legislature is made up of two chambers – the house and senate.  The lower chamber is the Texas House of Representatives.  The upper chamber is the Texas Senate.  The proper title for a state representative is “Representative _______.”  The proper title for a state senator is “Senator ________.”

It is a grievous violation of Civics 101 to call a state legislator “Congressman.”   Please don’t do it!   Members of Congress are the US Senators and US Representatives who represent us in Washington, DC, at the federal level.

The Texas House of Representatives is the lower house of the state legislature. The House is composed of 150 members elected from single-member districts across the stateThe average district has about 150,000 people. Texas House elections are held every two years on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November after the party primaries are held in March to choose the party nominees. Representatives are elected to two-year terms with no term limits. The House meets at the Texas Capitol every two years for legislative sessions in Austin.

Rep. Hughes represents the counties of Camp, Morris, Rains, part of Smith, Titus, and Wood.  Rep. Simpson represents Gregg and Upshur counties.  Rep. Schaefer represents the majority of Smith County.
