Let House Leadership Hear from YOU!

House Speaker John Boehner is considering which Balanced Budget Amendment (BBA) to bring to the floor for a vote. There are two versions. The fact that there is even a question as to which version to bring to the floor when the Republicans control the House is frustrating and indicates the establishment ruling class of the Republican Party is devoid of the constitutional core principles which should guide all decisions. With the exception of Representative Paul Ryan (Budget Committee Chair), House leadership does not demonstrate a deep sense of business urgency to rein in Big Government or even consistently acknowledge that we are OUT OF MONEY!

The “Clean” bi-partisan, Big Government version of the BBA

  • Does not cap spending as a percentage of GDP
  • Does not require a super majority to raise taxes
  • Will undoubtedly lead to tax increases & bigger & bigger government

The Stronger Versions of the BBA

  • Cap spending as a percentage of GDP
  • Some require a super majority to raise taxes, some do not [this is essential]
  • Due to the cap, will prioritize cutting spending before ever raising taxes

Amending our Constitution is a serious matter and should never been used as a tactical, political move just to garner election year support, but that is exactly what is about to occur. The truth is, the Constitution without any BBA at all, contains everything Congress needs to control the size and scope of the federal government; however, unprincipled men and women who do not take seriously the meaning of this oath of office long ago abandoned our Constitution:

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.

The bottom line is this:  until the 2012 elections, we have no choice but to make the best of a bad situation and push elected officials to do the right thing on this BBA. If a weak version passes Congress, we will do everything in our power to “fire” all who voted for it, and we will fight it at the state level. Until then, Congressman Paul Ryan is on record as only supporting a strong Balanced Budget Amendment. The top three GOP Leaders listed below are not as committed and must be reminded that we are watching.

Your job as a Defender of Liberty? Send a message that you are watching. Take action today by taking these three steps:

  1. Call Rep. Paul Ryan to thank him for his commitment to principle on the seriousness of amending the Constitution, for sticking to a “strong” Balanced Budget Amendment, and for his continued strong voice to cut spending! Paul Ryan: (202) 225-3031

  2. Call Speaker Boehner, Rep. Cantor and Rep. McCarthy to tell them that if they are bringing a BBA to the floor for a vote, it needs to be the “strongest” version with spending caps and a super-majority vote to raise taxes.
    House Speaker John Boehner (bay-ner): (202) 225-6205
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor:   (202) 225-2815
House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy:  (202) 225-2915
  3. If you live in Congressional District One:  call Rep. Louie Gohmert to thank him for his continued public calls to cut spending; ask him to help us hold the Republican Party accountable. Tyler office:  (903) 561-6349; DC office:  (202) 225-3035
  4. If you do not live in Congressional District One, go to Project Vote Smart to get contact information for your U. S. Representative. Remember, this is a US House action item – not a US Senate action at this time. Find who represents you (and other interesting information) at Project Vote Smart: http://votesmart.org/
