Local Taxes & YOU

Today, we are addressing local government since August and September are the months when all local governments – county, municipal, school districts, community colleges, and special taxing districts are finalizing plans on how your tax dollars will be used.  We are actively engaged in reviewing the budgets of:  Smith County, the City of Tyler, Tyler ISD, Tyler Junior College, and Emergency Services District 2.  There are many more local governments without watchdogs engaged in this process.  If your school district, city, or special taxing district is not listed here, what are you waiting for?

Do you know your local officials by name?  Do you know where they get their authority and scope of governance?  Do you know which statutes and policies guide their governance?  How much debt do the entities which tax your property owe?  How do they decide budget priorities?  Do you know how they plan to spend your tax dollars?  Are you sure they are providing the highest quality services for the very best price?   If you don’t know the answers to these questions, why don’t you know?   Are you waiting for a neighbor, JoAnn, or a Grassroots Board member to do the work?    If so, give some thought about personal responsibility and what our Founders said about our duty to hold government accountable to “We the People.”  Who is “We the People” anyway?  “We the People” is YOU!

Grassroots leaders will offer guidance and training for anyone who wants to become an active watchdog.  So much research can be done now without ever leaving your home!   Go to the contacts tab on the Grassroots website to contact a GAWTP board member about watchdog training.

Please be a “doer” – not just a forwarder of e-mail rants!  If you are mad as heck and won’t take it anymore, do your part!  If you don’t, one of these days, you’ll wake up to discover that you’ve worn out all the people at the front lines.  Together, let’s bring fiscal sanity and common sense back to government — one local government at a time.
