Our Friday lunch meeting topic is the much-debated issue of whether or not states should convene a “Convention of the States” in a constitutional attempt to rein in the federal government.
Although discussed and debated in activist circles for many years, the Convention of the States discussion took on new life with the August 2013 release of Mark Levin’s The Liberty Amendments: Restoring the American Republic.
For those not familiar with Mark Levin, his talk show is featured on AM 600 KTBB Monday – Friday from 5 PM – 8 PM and on Sirius XM’s Patriot Channel 125 from 6 PM – 9 PM. He is an American lawyer, author, constitutional scholar and the host of American syndicated radio show – The Mark Levin Show. Levin worked in the Reagan administration and was chief of staff for Attorney General Ed Meese. Levin is president of the Landmark Legal Foundation, contributes commentary to various media outlets, occasionally appears on Fox News, and is a personal friend of Rush Limbaugh.
Levin’s The Liberty Amendments proposes eleven amendments which he believes will restore the Constitution’s chief components: federalism, republicanism (representative government elected by the people), and limited government. He proposes making the amendments via an Article V Convention of the States.
Purpose of Friday’s meeting
This meeting is NOT an endorsement of a Convention of the States. We believe Grassroots America should hear both sides of this topic because there are good, decent patriots on both sides of this issue. For the purpose of introducing the topic, we have invited a pro-convention speaker. In the future, we plan to host a full-fledged debate on this topic.
